I believe ekphrasis is the word for poetry that is based on art, especially visual art--is there a word for art that is based on poetry? Because I really want that, want to do that, want to create art based on poetry. (Though, for the life of me, I can't figure out why--I'm not that hot a poet, and I'm a horrible artist.) Comment and discuss, please.

Ugh, there was that pseudo-art Yoko Ono did a few years back, where she took a blank canvas and instead of painting on it, she wrote out what you were supposed to be seeing. Which is kind of a neat idea, I guess, but at the time it made me want to retch. It still kind of does. I don't know what that has to do with anything, exactly. But. Yeah.

So she was a writer who would rather be called an artist? I just don't get that--not the wanting to be called an artist, but why the need to take one format and try to pass it off as another. It's like the prose books that are all broken up into faux-poetry (it happens a lot in juvenile novels right now)--they drive me crazy. Either write prose, and do it well, or write poetry, and do it well, but don't try to pass one off as the other. Ugh.

The inventors of new ideas are rarely the ones that actually implement it.
Who says that it has to be your poetry?
Or your art?

If you know someone who paints, have them find a poem they enjoy and read it to them over and over while they paint a picture.

Personally, I think it's a cool idea. I would have never thought of it.

It's an idea, and ideas aren't bad until we label them as such. If you want to do it, then do it. If not, then don't. It's that simple.

P.S. Fuck Yoko Ono. While I'm on it, fuck The Beatles too.

I would love to see what you could paint for hungering for the waves at night. Oh man. That would be fabulous.

Well, yeah, I know it can be someone else's poetry or art. I was mostly just taking a jab at myself. I don't know why.

I think it's a good idea, too, and I was inspired by someone talking about ekphrasis itself, and how neat it would be to go the other way around.

I love your P.S., too.
