[link] cultural appropriation in romance
Oct. 27th, 2009 07:25 pmHandy Hunter has a guest post at Dear Author about cultural appropriation in romance. I really enjoyed the article, but the comments are getting worse as the thread goes on. (Which is how comment threads tend to go, I guess.)
ETA: Apparently after the point where I stopped reading the comments got better.

I think it would be interesting to write a sci-fi novel where privilege and lack thereof is ascribed to different species by how far they have evolved: their intelligence, accomplishment and technological merit, lack of violence, etc., and where humans in general are at the bottom of the totem pole regardless of their gender, race or ethnicity. It would be interesting to see the characters of different species, races and genders face their privilege and lack thereof. As they fall in love and fuck. lol I've got to keep myself inspired!
Gahhhh. NaNoWriMo is coming next weekend and I still can't decide what I want to write!
