Lady Gaga and Beyonce put out the music video to “Telephone” which features quite a few blatant product placements.(1) Amanda Palmer, already under criticism for her new venture Evelyn, Evelyn(2), posts on Twitter that, “ironic product placement is only ok if you take no money & beyond that give all the income to something ironic. like the Klan.”

Sparkymonster posts an excellent, excellent response to Amanda Palmer’s racist response to the video: A Lesson in Good vs. Bad Irony Thanks to Amanda Palmer. Sparky includes some images of the horrible things the KKK has done, juxtaposed against the supposedly horrific product placement Amanda Palmer derides. (Edited to Add: In case it wasn’t clear, some of the images of the horrible things the KKK has done are graphic in nature.)

(Edited to Add: Sparky had to freeze comments on her post because of derailing, but you can still read what she had to say.)

Excerpt: Also, while I do enjoy irony and all that jazz, giving money to the KKK isn’t ironic. It’s giving money to the fucking KKK who have engaged in over a century of murder and domestic terrorism. If one wanted to ironically give away money earned through product placement, it would be funny (or somewhat politically/artistically interesting) to give it to Consumer Reports, AdBusters, the Community Party or really any organization that has something to do with consumerism/capitalism.

Do check out the comments of Sparky’s post, where a lot of discussion is taking place.

Hipster Racism is still racism and is neither funny nor acceptable.

I wish you would have warned that images there were graphic so I could turn off image enabling before going there. :-/

I apologize. I thought the note about the images being of things the KKK has done was a warning, but I will edit it to make that more clear.

Urgh, it was probably my bad. I just didn't think that photos would be so graphic. Amazing post tho.

Oh jesus, not AGAIN. [livejournal.com profile] ohnotheydidnt & the snark comms (http://community.livejournal.com/sf_drama/2850188.html) have been ripping her a new one over her shenanigans, esp. about her tweeting from the Golden Globes (http://community.livejournal.com/ohnotheydidnt/43075541.html) about how overrated and mundane it all was for her, the special little goffik snowflake. The whole conjoined twin gimmick for her next album wasn't already bad enough? I do believe that bad press < no press. I hope she learns how to occasionally STFU, but I have the feeling that hope will die in vain. lol

There's not a single funny thing about the Klan, unless it's the resemblance that their hoods have to dunce caps. Palmer's suggestion was very much not a good one, and she ought to be retracting and apologizing (although I'm nearly certain that won't be the case).
